Job Description for Project Manager, Operations

The operations project manager is responsible for managing a project and guiding its overall direction. The manager must communicate with the workers in the project, as well as higher-level employees such as senior leaders and management. The manager should be organized and able to meet deadlines on the project. The manager has to know how to develop reports on the project and find a way to keep the project in the expected budgetary range. An operations project manager should be able to attend regular meetings and give progress reports. In addition, an operations project manager must work well with clients.
This work is primarily mental, and people skills are an essential to succeed. The operations project manager typically works in an office setting, but he or she could also visit or work on the project site. This job frequently may require more than 40 hours a week, depending on the project. The hours worked could also increase closer to the project deadline. A number of firms or organizations hire project managers, include cities, media outlets, and websites.
An operations project manager likely will need to have successful projects in their portfolio to move up in their careers. Bigger firms typically require a manager have experience implementing and managing multiple projects at the same time. Depending on the project, an engineering degree may be helpful.
