Pros: Working as a Junior Researcher in the agricultural field is rewarding because we provide a valuable service to growers in our area. The ability to help others and solve problems is extremely gratifying. Furthermore, I get to work with insects, a group I've always been fascinated with ever since I was a child. They are arguably the only group of animals to display such a wide range of diversity in their behaviors and life-styles. You will never be bored when you study the wired wacky world of insects. As a result I am always learning something new everyday!
Cons: Our management structure: (1) their policies, (2) their lack of transparency, (3) their exorbitant inflated salaries, (4) their indifference to their employees, (5) remuneration policy, (6) corruption and ties with dodgy government officials (to name but a few).
The second most thing I like least about working for ARC is their salary scales. We are being paid lower than the market-related percentiles for other similar organisations in the country.
The poor working conditions we have to deal with on a daily basis. There is an urgent need to upgrade our buildings and labs and obtain new equipment that will aid us in our research. It is appalling that we claim to be a leader in research when we do not even have basic lab consumables we need to conduct our research.
The difficulty in obtaining funds for research. Income generated by the ARC should be used to fund research and not be used for bonuses for executive managers in head office.
