Anybody reading this blog is probably on a personal mission to realizing their ultimate career goals. It is time-consuming — it can take years to become successful in an industry — but it doesn’t have to take over your entire life. Here are some simple steps to take to help you achieve your goals without losing the balance in your life.
- Keep your resume and LinkedIn profile up to date. What have you accomplished in the last year? Write it down and figure out how you can sell yourself to potential employers.
- Networking is a major part of realizing your goals. A general rule to follow is to meet with one to three people who work in your industry but outside of your company. This keeps you in touch with other industry professionals and keeps you informed with industry news. In addition to this, it is also important to set up meetings with the influencers who work within your company. Meet during a casual lunch; this opens up the the possibility of being considered for special projects or a higher position.
- First impressions are important. What does your image say about you? Make sure you dress for success and create a look that is professional and modern. Don’t be too trendy or over accessorize, but stay classy, stylish and appropriate for the industry you work in.
- Chart your progress.Your career goals can change every few months and the expectations you have of yourself can change depending on your current position. Review your goals every six months and write down changes to your previous goals and any new accomplishments you have set your sights on. Knowing what you want gets you that much closer to achieving it.
