A lot of times, many of us are so happy to have even gotten the job that we’ll take any salary that is offered. What we don’t realize is that we don’t have to accept the first number thrown at us, because we can always negotiate salary and benefits before signing on the dotted line.
1. Never reveal your former salary. Stay mum on any of your former salaries, even if you are asked. Don’t be afraid to say you are paid a “competitive” salary, and that you are looking for something equally competitive.
2. Know how much the position should pay. Do your research beforehand and know what the average salary is for the position you have applied to. This way, you’ll know if it seems too low. To help you along the way, you can get a free salary report from PayScale.
3. Know your expectations. What is your bottom line? Know the absolute minimum salary you would accept for the job. Put together a budget of your expenses and know how much you need to survive.
4. List your bargaining chips. What are you willing to part with in the negotiating process? From benefits, to your own office and vacation time, know which aspects are most important to you before the negotiations begin.
5. Don’t show emotion. Keep your emotions in check when negotiating your salary. When the hiring manager or your new boss presents a figure, say nothing but nod your head in contemplation. Before you even need to say anything, the figure may suddenly jump higher in those quiet moments, especially if the manager was low-balling you.
