Just like last year, Amazon hopes to hire 120,000 seasonal workers this holiday season to work at its fulfillment, sorting and customer service centers in 33 states, nearly doubling the number of workers in those areas.
That is, if they can find them.
“It’s getting harder to find holiday employees with unemployment now at 4.2%, the lowest jobless rate since 2001,” writes Chris Isidore at CNN. “The Labor Department said Wednesday that there are 6.1 million unfilled job openings across the economy, essentially unchanged from the record level reached the month before. A little over one in ten of those openings are in retail.”
Seasonal Jobs at Amazon
Pay varies for seasonal jobs at Amazon, but most positions offer between $10 and $12 an hour. These temporary jobs also offer some benefits, including holiday overtime pay, basic life and AD&D insurance, on-the-job training and an Employee Assistance program.
In addition, Amazon says that many of its seasonal workers either come back each year or become full-time.
Benefits for full-time employees are more comprehensive: in addition to health insurance and retirement savings plans, fulfillment center workers are entitled to the same Leave Share and Ramp Back program benefits as office workers, allowing them to share paid parental leave with a spouse.
Fulfillment center workers also get a benefit that office workers don’t get: the Career Choice program, which pre-pays 95 percent of tuition expenses for in-demand careers.
