Tricks and treats may only come once a year, but a creepy job can last all year long. This Halloween, PayScale presents salaries of the creepiest jobs out there just in time for the spookiest day of the year.
In order to compile this list, we looked at salary data from over twelve-thousand employees to find out how much these creepy jobs pay. It is important to note that while these jobs may be creepy to most of us, they are crucial to the maintenance of our society.
Gravedigger – $30,700 per year
Nothing says creepy quite like being the person who is responsible for burying the dead, but someone has to do it. A career that goes six feet under may not be the most fashionable trade, but those who work in this profession have an advantage in the job market because for the foreseeable future, there will always be a need for this type of work. Most people who work as gravediggers have no more than a high school diploma.
Exterminator – $34,500 per year
If the word exterminator brings images of creepy crawlies to mind, you already know that this job definitely qualifies as creepy. Exterminators aren’t the highest earners out of our creepy jobs group, but the profession itself only requires a high school diploma. If the occasional creepy crawly doesn’t bug you out, being an exterminator might be the perfect job for you.
Taxidermist – $35,900 per year
Taxidermists have one of the creepiest jobs on our list – making dead animals look alive again. Whether that is your longtime pet (Frankenweenie, anyone?) or a trophy from your latest hunting outing, taxidermists make it happen. Most taxidermy roles only require a high school degree.
Cemetery Manager – $45,900 per year
Cemetery managers do a lot more than manage the dead. They ensure that cemetery grounds are cut, trimmed and ready for visitors to pay their respects to the deceased. They also manage crematoriums and even cemetery staff like gravediggers. Cemetery managers are the second-highest paid workers on our creepy jobs list, next to morticians.
Mortician – $46,600 per year
Morticians are the highest paid workers on PayScale’s creepy job list. Morticians, also known as funeral directors, are in a profession that essentially deals with the business of being dead. Loved ones of the deceased hire morticians to host memorials, funerals and burials of the dead. Morticians are the only job on our list that requires a college diploma.
