There are a lot of contenders for "worst part of the job search process," but writing cover letters has to be right up there at the top of the list. Trying to hook hiring managers' attention without sounding like a caricature of a used car salesman or just regurgitating your resume is a challenge worthy of early-Mad Men Don Draper. So how can you get their attention, without feeling cheesy or wasting everyone's time?
Cover letters are the bane of most job seekers' existence. It's hard to write one that doesn't parrot your resume, sound like a form letter, or feel fake to both writer and reader. However, no matter how hard you find composing cover letters, we can almost guarantee you've never written anything like this.
What's worse than creating a resume? If you said, "writing a cover letter," you are both correct and also probably in the midst of a job search. Cover letters are famously hard to pull off. Get too creative, and you look overly eccentric; hew too closely to a template, and you look like a robot.
