In terms of college return on investment, marketing careers and sales jobs are often a good investment. PayScale determines the ROIs for each school based on the salaries of their alumni who go on to work in marketing and sales jobs, regardless of their major.

Marketing and sales are good career paths if you love people or want a job that lets you use your creativity but still earn a high income. These jobs are in high demand - every employer needs employees to convince their customers to purchase their product or service - and you need good communication, writing, and analytical and interpersonal skills to succeed. If you are interested in studying English or communications in college but don't know what to do with those degrees, consider marketing and sales as a career path.

In PayScale's College ROI Report, marketing careers and sales careers perform very well. Stanford University in Palo Alto, California reports the highest 20-year net ROI for alumni who go into sales and marketing jobs. Without financial aid, students see a 20-year net ROI of $789,700. If Cardinals do receive financial aid, that number soars to $946,900. Stanford is a pricey school, but with that kind of ROI, it's worth going into debt for if you get accepted.

The second highest college ROI for sales careers and markers comes from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. Clarkson students usually study business or engineering subjects, and their rigorous coursework tends to land them high-paying sales and marketing jobs, resulting in a 20-year net ROI of $854,800.

The University of California, Berkeley, home to the famous Haas School of Business, is a real deal for California residents who want to work in sales or marketing. Students who pay in-state tuition see a 20-year net ROI of $799,600. Like Stanford, these students probably benefit from proximity to one of the hottest job markets in the country, the Silicone Valley and San Francisco areas. Even the coolest tech start-ups need marketing and salespeople to push their products.

The University of Virginia provides the highest annualized ROI to alumni in marketing and sales - 17.7 percent. Consistently rated as one of the best public schools in the country, UVA grads confidently receive high salaries and high returns thanks to the low in-state tuition UVA offers.
