History and culture abound on the island of Puerto Rico. With a year-round tropical climate, Puerto Rico is a popular vacation destination with both mountains and beaches. However, four centuries of Spanish colonial rule, followed by a more than a century of American rule, have yielded some of the oldest and most fascinating historical architecture gems. As a US territory, residents of Puerto Rico are US citizens.


Both English and Spanish are considered official languages in Puerto Rico. However, the language of instruction at colleges in Puerto Rico is predominantly in Spanish. However, it is possible to find some bilingual English-Spanish programs.


More than a dozen colleges and universities can be found in Puerto Rico. The top two colleges in Puerto Rico include University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, which is public, and Universidad Metropolitana, which is private.
