Here at PayScale, Inc. (“PayScale”) our mission is pay transparency, but we also care about being transparent with our visitors and users about our privacy practices. This privacy statement describes what personal data we collect from you through our sites and products and how we use that data.
What information do we collect?
Our primary purpose for collecting data is to provide you with the services and features that best meet your compensation information and management needs. We collect personal data, which is information that can be used to identify an individual, through various ways, including as follows:
- Registering for a PayScale account: When you register for a PayScale account, the system will ask for your email address and to create a password. Subsequently, the system asks for detailed job and compensation information through a survey that’s used to generate your personal compensation report. Once you register with PayScale and sign-in to our services, you are not anonymous to us.
- Visiting PayScale.com: We automatically receive and record information on our server logs from your browser, including your IP address, PayScale cookie information, and the page you requested.
- From organizations that buy our products: PayScale may receive personal data from organizations that buy our compensation management tools. If your employer is a PayScale customer, you can learn more from your employer about what information it shares with us, which will vary based on what product your employer purchases.
Below are the types of information we collect to deliver this site, our products and services, and operate our business.What we collect from you will vary depending on what products and services you use and how you use our products and services.

- financial information;
- billing information;
- resume information;
- applicant information;
- social media profiles;
- event registrations and preferences;
- feedback and reviews, or requests for PayScale support;

- usage data, including, log files, information collected by cookies and similar technologies about the pages viewed, links clicked, and other actions taken when accessing our websites;
- activities, interactions, preferences, transactional information, and other computer and connection information (such as IP address) relating to use of our websites and our services; and
- other personal information provided by you, individually, or your employer.
We also collect information that’s not personally identifiable.This is data that cannot be used to identify an individual, such as the number of click-throughs and other usage data. This information is gathered through aggregated tracking information derived mainly by tallying page views throughout our sites. This data allows us to tailor our content to site users' needs and prevent abusive or fraudulent usage.
How do we use the information we collect?
PayScale uses information for the following purposes:
- to provide information about our products, services, special offers, and events;
- to personalize visitor content and experience on our sites, as well as with our products and services;
- to provide products, services, and support to you, our customers, and prospective customers;
- to communicate with our business partners regarding business matters;
- undertaking related tasks for legitimate business purposes;
- aggregating data and averaging compensation information to generate personalized compensation reports; and
- other purposes disclosed at the time of collection.
Service Announcements: Service-related announcements will be sent to you when necessary. For instance, we might send you an email if our service is temporarily suspended for maintenance. Generally, you may not opt-out of these communications, since they’re not promotional in nature. If you do not wish to receive them, you may deactivate your PayScale account by sending a deactivation request to email@example.com.
Promotional Communications: You may receive marketing emails from PayScale about specials and new products or by opting in or out from receiving promotional communications. For example, if you purchase a product, but do not wish to receive any additional marketing material from us, you can indicate your preference in your account or user details. You may also opt-out of receiving these communications by clicking the unsubscribe link provided in each communication and following the instructions provided.
Tell a Friend about PayScale: If you love your PayScale experience and choose to tell a friend about our site, we will ask you for your friend's email address. We will automatically send your friend a one-time email inviting him or her to visit the site. PayScale collects this information for the sole purpose of sending this one-time email. PayScale does not store this information.
PayScale Advice Forum and Comments: If you use the PayScale Advice forum or post a comment to a posting on this site, any information submitted may be removed by PayScale, but we do not guarantee that personal data you submit will be removed. You should be aware that any personal data you submit through a forum or posting has the potential to be read, collected, or used by other users or visitors, and could be used to send you unsolicited messages. We are not responsible for the personal data or other information you or other users or visitors choose to submit in these forums or postings.
Customer Testimonials: We may post customer testimonials on our sites. PayScale collects the customer's consent prior to posting the testimonial.
PayScale Alumni Survey Data: If you provide information to PayScale through a PayScale Alumni Survey at the invitation of your alma mater, we may provide non-personally identifiable information in its raw form or in the aggregate to your alma mater for research and analysis. Your personal data will not be shared.
Got web beacons?
Yes, we do! What’s a web beacon?They’re not as terrifying as they sound if you think we’re talking about a warning signal. A web beacon is a clear picture file that allows our site to access cookies and help track marketing campaigns and general usage patterns of visitors to those sites. Web beacons can recognize certain types of information, such as cookie numbers, time and date of a page view, and a description of the page where the web beacon is placed. We don’t share your personal data with third parties using web beacons, but through web beacons, we may collect information about your Internet browser, operating system, IP address, date of visit, time of visit, and path taken through PayScale.We may use web beacons to count visitors to our sites and recognize visitors through cookies, and we may include a third party’s web beacons on our sites. Access to cookies helps us personalize your experience when you visit our site.We may also include web beacons in HTML-formatted emails we send you to help us determine the effectiveness of such emails.We may also use web beacons externally. When do we share information?
We may occasionally share information, including personal data, we collect from individuals or their employers with third parties as follows:
- to our subsidiaries, affiliates, and contractors, who process personal data on behalf of PayScale to provide the products and services requested;
- channel partners, such as distributors and resellers, to fulfill product, service and information requests, and to provide customers and prospective customers with information about us and our products and services;
- to third party service providers contracted to provide services on our behalf;
- partners, sponsors, or other third parties with whom PayScale jointly offers related services; and
- other corporate entities, if PayScale entertains or experiences a business transition, such as a merger, acquisition by another company, or sale of all or a portion of its assets.
PayScale Responsible for its Contractors and Third Parties: If we transfer personal data received to a third party, the third party's access, use, and disclosure of the personal data must also follow our obligations under this privacy statement or our other agreement with you, and we are responsible for any failure to do so by the third party unless we prove we are not responsible for the event giving rise to the damage.
Court Orders and Other Legal Process: We reserve the right to disclose your personal data as required by applicable laws and when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect our rights or to comply with a judicial proceeding, court order, or legal process.
Bankruptcy or Other Transaction: If we should ever file for bankruptcy or have our assets sold to or merge with another entity, information we receive from you from this site is a PayScale asset and may be transferred.
Credit Card Processing: We use other third parties to provide credit card processing services. When you sign-up for PayScale services, we will share billing information as necessary for the third party to provide that service. These third parties are prohibited from using your personal data for any other purpose.
Sharing Non-Personally Identifiable Information: We share non-personally identifiable information in anonymous aggregate form with partners and other trusted businesses. This information is used by these third parties to help us improve our sites and products and services. In addition, this information may be used by the third parties to provide targeted marketing messages from the third parties. You will be provided with the ability to opt-out of receiving additional marketing messages from these third parties.PayScale will not share, rent, or trade your personal data with third parties for their promotional purposes.
Are you located outside of the United States?
PayScale is based in the United States (U.S.), so our employees are in the U.S. and our sites and products are hosted in the U.S. If you are visiting or providing information from the European Union or other regions with laws governing data collection and use that may differ from U.S. laws, please note that you are transferring your personal data to the U.S., which may have different data protection laws.By providing your personal data, you consent to:

A message about data minimums and "Data withheld for Privacy"
When you view a report, you may see a message that says, “Data point withheld for privacy.”This mask is not removed until there’s sufficient data in the system to create an average or predicted value or a set of points for analysis that meets applicable legal guidelines (such as the Antitrust Safety Zone established by the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission you can learn about here); thus preventing the identification of personal data. To protect the privacy and rights of individuals, employers, and employees, we only display data that has been rendered anonymous by removing various combinations of information, such as presenting an average or “aggregate” of multiple data points, limiting the base number of employers in any analysis to five or more, pulling back from a local search to a broader geographic area, among others.
Your use of PayScale information
To enable the attribute-matching features of our products and services, users running a PayScale report receive limited access to questionnaire data in the form of generic peer profiles. While these profiles include data on job, compensation, geographic location, skills, experience, education and demographic information, the intent of our service is that this information is not traceable to any particular user. Use of the system signifies an understanding of the source of the data and an agreement on the part of the user to both access and share anonymous user data.
To enable the attribute-matching features of our products and services, users running searches on our system are asked to enter employee and job-specific profile information. While these profiles include data on employee skills, tasks, experiences, organization size, geographic location, minimum requirements for jobs, compensation, skills, experience, education and demographic information, the intent of our service is that this information is not traceable to any particular employer or employee. Use of the system signifies an understanding of the source of the data and an agreement on the part of the user to both access and share anonymous user data.
Can I change my account Information and preferences?
Of course!You can edit your PayScale account information and preferences at any time, including whether you want PayScale to contact you about specials or new products.If your personally identifiable information changes, you may delete, correct, or update it by making the change in your account on your own.If you desire to deactivate your PayScale account, you may do so by emailing our Customer Support email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by contacting us at the contact information listed below. PayScale will respond to requests within 30 days of receiving the request.After your account has been deactivated, your profile information may remain in our archived records subject to this privacy statement.
Does PayScale have security measures in place?
Your PayScale account information is password-protected for your privacy and security. All data transmissions between your browser and our services are protected by industry-standard or better procedures. However, since no data transmissions over the Internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, we cannot promise the security of any information you transmit to us and you do so at your own risk. Once we receive your transmission, we make reasonable efforts to ensure security on our systems, protecting it in secure, environmentally-protected data storage facilities that require passkey entry and “need-only” log-in access permissions for authorized personnel. We also maintain a security incident log, enforce data privacy and security protocols, and train employees on these policies to best protect data from accidental or unintentional exposure, improper distribution or potential theft.When entering sensitive information (such as email addresses, passwords, and credit card information), we use high-grade industry security measures, requiring TLS1.0 or higher, to protect data transmissions. Please note that this is not a guarantee that such information will not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed by breach of such firewalls and secure server software.
If we’ve confirmed that there’s a security systems breach that impacts you, we will notify you so that you can take appropriate protective steps. By using our sites or services or by providing personal data to us, you agree that we can communicate with you electronically regarding security, privacy, and other administrative issues relating to your use of this site or our services. We may also post a notice on our sites if a security breach occurs. If this happens, you will need a web browser enabling you to view our sites. What if I purchased a business product from PayScale?
We offer various business products for use by organizations.If there’s a conflict between this privacy statement and the terms of any agreement between you and PayScale regarding the business product, the terms of that agreement will control.When an organization tries, purchases, or subscribes to our business products, or obtains support for such products, we collect data to provide and improve the product, optimize user experience with our products, operate our business, and communicate with the user.Here are some common examples:
- When an organization engages with a PayScale sales representative, we collect the organization’s contact's name and other contact data along with information about the organization to support that engagement.
- When a customer interacts with a PayScale support professional, we may collect device and usage data or error reports to diagnose and resolve problems.
- When an organization pays for our products, we collect contact and payment data to process the payment.
- When a customer receives communications from us, we use data to personalize the content of the communication.
