A&P mechanics are hired by commercial aviation companies or airports to help maintain and repair a wide variety of aircraft.
An A&P mechanic's primary job is to maintain the aircraft so that it meets FAA standards for safety and standards. They perform routine maintenance and checks, repairs, and inspections of all critical areas of the plane’s external frame and internal engine workings. They run routine tests, make notes of test results, and repair or report all anomalies as noted to supervisory mechanics within the company; notifications must include if repairs cannot be made to bring the aircraft up to proper standards for safe operation and flight.
To become an A&P mechanic, an individual must first complete the requisite secondary technical education, which is normally acquired through technical schools. Upon graduating, they must earn an A&P license that certifies their training and fitness to work on airplanes. Many persons first entering this field may begin their careers at a junior level with larger commercial aircraft outfits, “apprenticing” with senior mechanics to gain experience.
