Job Description for Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Assistant quantity surveyors work as part of the quantity surveying team, often as junior adjuncts to quantity surveyors. This team is responsible for the costs associated with civil engineering projects, and their primary aim is minimizing costs while maintaining a high level of quality and meeting applicable codes and standards. Assistant quantity surveyors help the survey team with a number of specific tasks that fall under this broader aim. They help prepare documentation such as contracts and bills of sale. Assistant quantity surveyors also perform ongoing cost analyses, do feasibility studies at the beginning of projects, continuously work on cost control, and analyze commercial risks. They help assign work to subcontractors, as well as arrange payment for completed work and keep track of all active contracts.
Assistant quantity surveyors generally split time between an office and the construction site. From the outset, they are involved in the planning stages of construction and engineering projects, estimating costs and formulating budgets. As projects progress, assistant quantity surveyors spend their time tracking expenses and making adjustments to the budget as needed. As projects near completion, they shift to helping devise and author reports on expenses and profitability as required by their employer.
A bachelor's degree in business or a related field may be required for this position, and experience in a related position may be preferred.
