Chief accountants typically handle the financial transactions for their company. They are often employed at government agencies, hospitals' billing departments, banks, retail chains, and a number of other establishments. Their day-to-day work typically includes handling tax-related duties, overseeing the business' payroll, collecting and paying bills, handling discrepancies, and maintaining a budget. They may also oversee the work of other accountants as well, checking subordinates' work, providing feedback, and answering questions; they may also play a role in the hiring process and have a say in the accountants hired for their business as well.Read More...
Chief accountants must oversee the maintenance of the company's transactions and assets, and they should stay up to date with relevant practices, laws, and technologies as well. In some instances, chief accountants may need to develop and implement accounting procedures for their organization as well; this includes training subordinates in their department and other individuals in the organization as well.
A bachelor's degree in accounting is typically required for this position, although a relevant master's degree may required as well. Employers generally prefer their chief accountant be a certified public accountant (CPA) as well. Chief accountants must have excellent math skills, be proficient in basic financial software, and have strong leadership and organizational skills.
