Job Description for Clinical Pharmacist
A clinical pharmacist typically is in charge of providing services to the division director, such as assisting with continuing education programs for pharmacy students, health care services, or medical staff. A clinical pharmacist also advises physicians on drug usage and dose control in hospitals/clinics as well. Specifically, a clinical pharmacist must advise physicians on any and all dangers of various drugs, list their side effects, and help them determine the correct dosages for the patient. Additionally, a clinical pharmacist normally coordinates the pharmacy technician’s duties, such as labeling/delivering various medications or supplies, making sure drugs are recorded and delivered, and preparing of drugs. Sometimes, a clinical pharmacist must serve in a mentorship role through means such as training pharmacy residents in practical/theoretical knowledge and facilitating direct, supervised experience. A Pharm.D. is necessary to be a clinical pharmacist. Several years of experience are also generally required. He or she should also have strong communication skills (verbal and written), as well as an extensive knowledge of drugs, medical procedures, and therapies. Additionally, a clinical pharmacist must know all the state and federal laws/regulations related to the practice of pharmacy.
