A manager of production and operating workers, also known as a first-line supervisor, typically oversees 20 or more front-line employees. The workers under supervision of the first-line supervisor are most likely laborers that complete production on-site. The first-line supervisor must watch over these employees and ensure that high production speed and quality are met. They may at times need to hire new employees, as well as train new hires. Ideally, a first-line supervisor has previous supervisory experience in a manufacturing or production field; typically, three to five years is preferred.
