Job Description for Heating, Air Conditioning, or Refrigeration Mechanic / Installer
A heating, air conditioning, or refrigeration mechanic/installer works with various climate control and ventilation systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. Frequently this job is known as an HVAC (for Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) technician.Read More...
These mechanic/installers set up new HVAC systems in homes and businesses. This may require performing a customer-needs assessment and coming up with a heating and cooling solution that matches those requirements. The technician then installs the equipment, including necessary ventilation and ducting needs, as well as ensures the system to be working properly. For commercial accounts (such as restaurants or grocery stores), this job may also include installation of new refrigeration units and walk-in coolers or freezers as well.
This occupation also services and maintains this climate control equipment. Many dedicated companies that hire for this job work with preventative maintenance contracts, and the mechanic/installer visits these accounts to ensure proper working order of the equipment, as well as changing out filters and conducting inspections of wiring, ductwork, and ventilation systems.
The education requirements for this field are normally a relevant technical school degree and certification in HVAC repair and installation. In many jurisdictions, a certification test and certificate or license may be required. Additionally, persons at the entry level on this job should expect to find work mostly on smaller residential jobs until they acquire more experience and can move on to accounts or companies that work with larger facilities.
While the mechanic/installer normally works during regular business hours, in HVAC companies that do commercial work, it is normal for the repair personnel to rotate “on call” shifts for 24-hour emergency availability. Persons in this field should also expect to work outdoors in the heat of summer or freezing cold of winter as a regular part of their job duties. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
