The transcriptionist may also make abstracts and summaries from patient medical records, as well as other documents. It is essential to be familiar and comfortable with using medical codes. Strong typing and ten-key skills are important. There may sometimes be changes in the medical codes that are assigned, so it is necessary to keep up to date. Since the job involves looking at a computer screen for the majority of the shift, strong endurance and the ability to sit for an extended period of time is important. Much of the work is done independently, so it is important to be self-motivated and to be able to adhere to guidelines. Attention to detail is also an essential personality aspect, as accuracy is needed.
To become a medical transcriptionist, one will usually have to have a degree and/or a certification from a program of study related to the field. The use of medical transcriptionist software and mechanical dictation equipment is also needed. The work is usually done in an office environment, which may be within a hospital or other medical office, but some jobs are done remotely. Both part-time and full-time jobs are usually available.
