Orthodontists must have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills in order to properly diagnose and treat dental ailments. As most orthodontists elect to open their own practices, they may specialize in particular types of treatments and work primarily with specific demographics of patients. They may occasionally be required to work long hours or between several offices, so the abilities to adapt to flexible working hours and travel when necessary are very important. It is also essential that they stay up-to-date on all new developments within their fields.
The position of an orthodontist requires a great deal of education and expertise. Aspiring orthodontists should earn a degree in dentistry, often by completing an undergraduate program followed by three additional years of education in dentistry and a satisfactory score on the Dental Admission Test.
