A medical pathologist can generally find employment in medical agencies, where it is essential to diagnose and treat various forms of diseases. Additionally, duties can include managing toxicology tests and analyzing case reports, in order to prove viable data that can be used by doctors to implement effective treatments. They can also be responsible for managing other lab technicians and physicians that are a part of their research team. Medical pathologists can also perform autopsies to establish a cause of death. Medical pathologists will often closely work with other physicians and surgeons to communicate their findings during laboratory experiments and will provide essential advice to promote effective medical care for all patients.
In order to become a medical pathologist, employers will require that applicants are either a doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) or a medical doctor (M.D.). They also require residency experience in a well-established medical agency. It is essential that applicants obtain a valid license by passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Furthermore, applicants must pass the national board certification exam in pathology. Employers may also require prospective applicants to have a minimum of five to ten years in the respective field.
