For parents, general pediatricians are also a source of counseling and comfort. Many parents turn to them for advice regarding physical or mental issues with children, which range from diet to psychological or behavioral diagnoses. Pediatricians also assess these areas when seeing patients and offer recommendations and assistance to parents who may need a greater understanding of the circumstances.
As can be surmised by the broad range of services that may be required in the healthcare of children, a pediatrician is something of a jack-of-all-trades. Still, their primary focus is on the welfare and general health of young adults and kids, and they typically focus on early detection of potential problems to recognize and treat them as early as possible. Because of the unique aspects of child care and parent-assurance, general pediatricians should have excellent people skills and good bedside manner for working with children.
Aspiring general pediatricians should specialize in the discipline during the latter stages of medical school training, and their internships and residencies will focus on this field. Those in this position normally work in small practices or clinics, and some may work in large hospitals. They generally work during traditional business hours in a medical office or clinical setting. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
