Job Description for Retail Store Assistant
A retail store assistant works in a retail environment, such as a department store or a smaller retail store. He or she provides customer service. The assistant will greet customers when they enter the store and will ask the customers what kind of assistance can be provided. The assistant may be able to offer recommendations based on the customer’s needs. Some stores will offer commission, so it is important to be able to upsell, while providing friendly customer service that does not overly pressure the customer. It is important to be friendly, to be able to love working with customers, and to be able to adapt service to individual customers. It is essential to keep the store neat and clean, so it is welcoming to customers at all times. Stock levels may be monitored by the assistant, and inventory duties may be carried out. Items that are selling well may be communicated to management so that these items can be stocked up on. Merchandise may also be arranged by the assistant, so it is presented in a manner that is attractive to customers.
The retail store assistant will usually work with other assistants, so strong teamwork skills are important. Other duties that involve things such as cashiering and answering telephone calls may also be given to the assistant.
