They keep internal networks functional for the company itself, as well as maintain that functionality for clients and customers who need to interact with the company. The server systems administrator typically works with both the software and hardware systems that power a company’s various networks. They must be capable of maintaining and managing support for all hardware. The systems administrator should also be familiar with all software running on company computers and be able to provide the company employees with technical support. In addition, a systems administrator is normally responsible for new software installations and upgrades to existing systems, and they usually help provide training needed by affected employees.
As part of their job responsibilities, server systems administrators also maintain user accounts on the networks, facilitating the adding and deleting of accounts, as well as handling password queries. They also work to keep the network technologically up to date and efficient. Systems administrators also maintain network security; it is usually their responsibility to ensure best practices on all company and client passwords and accounts, as well as maintaining the security of all sensitive company data. The position normally requires the employee to work normal business hours, but most systems administrators are put “on call” by their companies in case of after-hours emergencies, and the employee may be expected to respond to these cases at any time of day or night.
A systems administrator for servers usually must have at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Most companies also require some work experience in IT.
