A high school diploma generally is required for a systems administrator; a bachelor's degree in IT, computer science, engineering, or a related field generally is preferred, although experience may be substituted for college education. System administrators using the Windows platform must have strong problem solving and critical thinking skills as much of their job entails resolving the many issues that may arise in the network. They also need strong customer service and communication skills as they will often need to convey highly technical information to non-experts.
