Job Description for Travel Coordinator
Travel coordinators, also known as travel agents, schedule, plan, and offer their travel expertise to clients. They are responsible for planning vacations for individuals who are traveling alone, in groups or with families. Coordinators may make travel arrangements for other organizations' employees, which may include domestic and international transportation and arrangements for lodging. These professionals must be aware of their clients' needs to recommend the best possible vacation destinations, routes, tour packages, and lodging.Read More...
Travel coordinators must determine costs, travel time to the destination, travel dates, and the accommodations that the client will stay in. They may also handle expense reports, verify organizational credit card statements, and schedule meetings depending on their organization's needs. Travel coordinators generally work in an office environment, spending most of their time working on a computer and talking with clients over email, phone, and in person. They are often self-employed or work for airlines or travel agencies.
A bachelor's degree with a focus on travel, tourism, or hospitality management may be preferred. Previous experience may be required or preferred as well. Some states may require the travel coordinator to be licensed. Being proficient in additional languages is often helpful, and the travel coordinator must be able to build their knowledge of foreign requirements for visas, vaccinations, and any other necessary documentation. Travel coordinators must have strong attention to detail, as well as organizational and communication skills.
