Job Description for Waiter/Waitress Captain
The waiter/waitress captain is the person that has been put in charge of the rest of a restaurant's serving staff. They generally are promoted to this position after having worked as a waiter/waitress first at a given restaurant. This person must be familiar with everything the restaurant has to offer: This includes menus, bar items, entertainment and any other thing a customer might ask about. Job requirements can include training new servers, creating a fair and effective floor plan for a given shift, and overseeing the shift changes and the transfer of tables from the server whose shift is ending to the server whose shift is beginning. Waiter/waitress captains are in charge of assigning side work (such as restocking utensils, napkins, silverware, etc.), monitoring side stations, and they decide who can go home first on a slower shift or at the end of a shift. The waiter/waitress captain also has to make sure everyone is following the policies and regulations set forth by the restaurant, and they have the authority to write up those who break the rules.
The waiter/waitress captain must establish communication lines between the front of the house and the back of the house. When something has sold out it is the duty of the waiter/waitress captain to quickly inform the serving staff and inform them of any additions or replacements on the menu. The waiter/waitress captains are in charge till their shift ends, so they must be able to handle any situation that may occur.
