Any entity, be it a government organization, charity, or business, is likely to have and store sensitive information to which employees of the company will need access to perform their jobs. Information management specialists work with management and information security personnel to help establish parameters and tiers for access of information, as well as how information is allowed to flow within the organization and how it may be shared outside it. They may also help to prepare ways for the company to segment the information it acquires so that whole pieces can be stored based on sensitivity at various layers of access.
Information management specialists also determine how long various pieces of information must be held and ensure that secured information is always held and maintained at proper levels of security and encryption based on access rights and sensitivity. They may also set up cloud-based accounts and monitor traffic to and from storage, as well as manage protocols and parameters within the organization and help department heads enforce them by monitoring computer data flows during work hours.
An undergraduate degree in information management, technology, or a related field is often a minimum requirement for this position. Because much of this work is available in the public sector, aspiring information management specialists may need to obtain a security clearance and undergo background checks. Most information management specialists work in a data office environment during regular weekly business hours. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
