Metallurgy is the process by which different metals are combined into alloys and then used to create materials for use by others or used to create end products themselves. A metallurgist - process is a person who acts as something of a troubleshooter and problem-solver for this process, usually at a fabrication plant. The process metallurgist works to help continually reduce the amount of metal material that fails to meet quality control standards. Because of the precise nature of fabrication and formulation in the creation of alloy metals, it is a given that a certain small percentage will fail a manufacturer's quality control standards. The process metallurgist will typically work very closely with the quality control managers to help determine how faults may be occurring, as well as methods to reduce their incidence. The process metallurgist will typically seek to discover if faults can be reduce by examining machine systems, formula processes, and employee inputs.
A process metallurgist will normally hold a university degree in metallurgy or some related discipline, with larger companies giving preference to individuals who also have education in industrial management or engineering. An employee in this position will typically spend time in the metal plant, as well as doing computer work in data analysis in an office.
