A physiotherapist assistant helps the physiotherapist take care of patients who are injured, have certain diseases, and/or are older adults. The assistant helps administer physiotherapy programs for patients, including helping them carry out exercises included in their program. When the assistant sees issues with the program, they must make suggestions to the physiotherapist on potential modifications and help enact any changes. The assistant often must assist the patient in moving from one area to another, which sometimes involves lifting. When doing exercises, the physiotherapist assistant might also have to lift or give support to the patient. The physiotherapist assistant may teach patients how to do exercises and must be able to motivate them to succeed. The physiotherapist assistant must also have good writing skills, as writing reports and notes for patients is necessary; some computer skills may also be needed to create reports.
An associate’s degree in physical therapy or a similar field is generally required for this position. Certification and licensing is also necessary for most jobs, along with experience in physical therapy. Generally, this job takes place indoors, though some exercises may be done outside; minimum physical requirements are necessary, as substantial standing and moving is typically needed in fulfilling day-to-day duties.
