The primary responsibilities of a principal structural engineer include designing new telecommunication sites, designing new equipment load frames and antenna support structures, and determining the nature and scope of projects. They are also in charge of evaluating existing structures and certifying their integrity, as well as preparing structural plans, calculations and specifications. These engineers generally work in a small team in an office setting. Although they generally work during regular office hours, overtime and work during evenings and weekends may be required. These engineers must have working experience with AutoCAD, and able to manage a small staff of employees. Excellent computer and communication skills are also needed. They should work well in a team setting, as well as on their own with minimal supervision.
Generally, structural principal engineers must have at least a bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering, as well as extensive previous experience. Certification requirements for this position include a state license for structural engineering.
