However, it is more important to help users do their job more easily than it is to include cool technology, make things look pretty, or show off your programming skill. That means you need to understand what the users do, understand how the current technology gets in the way, and make sure that you aren't writing the system they will be complaining about in 5 years time. Oh, and ideally keep their managers happy along the way.
