Structural drafters produce technical drawings based on rough specifications, sketches, and calculations from various personnel in the field. They must verify this rough work, making modifications to their drawings when necessary to ensure they conform to specifications. Structural drafters create multidimensional graphic views, layouts, and flowcharts using computer aided drafting (CAD) software. They should also be able to make any corrections by hand using drafting equipment such as slide rules, squares, and calculators. Additionally, structural drafters act as a liaison between engineers and construction professionals. Individuals in this position typically spend the majority of their time in an office setting, but they may need to conduct on-site assessment as well.
At least an associate's degree in engineering or architecture is generally required for this position, along with completion of a drafting course from a vocational or technical institution. Completion of relevant coursework from a qualified technical school may also be accepted. At least two years of experience in this field is generally required; drafting certification and knowledge of CAD systems are generally required or preferred. Structural drafters must possess exceptional time-management and organizational abilities. These professionals should also have excellent communication skills, and attention to detail is a priority due to the precise calculations necessary to perform this position.
