A truck driver (medium) may perform a variety of duties depending on the needs and requirements of their company. Generally, it is the truck driver's responsibility to ensure the correct cargo makes it safely to its destination on schedule and that the appropriate signatures and paperwork are obtained. The majority of a truck driver's time is spent outdoors on the roads, with a smaller portion of time being spent at the home facility and the customer facility. The hours can be highly variable; the shipment length and time are volatile and based on the customer request. Long shifts, overtime, multiple short trips, and odd hours may be expected. The job is physically and mentally demanding and involves a significant amount lifting and transferring items onto and off of the truck, as well as the ability to drive and stay awake for long periods of time.
Truck drivers typically must have a special license, typically a CDL, to be considered for the job. A good driving history is also a must. Depending on the cargo, there may be other requirements, such as tanker or hazmat endorsements.
