A regional sales director holds a high-level management position and is charged with overseeing revenue generation strategies for multiple locations, stores, and retail outlets. Companies that hire a regional sales director typically rely on consumer sales through these retail outlets as the primary means of creating profits. The board or controlling interests of the company establish budgetary expectations for sales and expect the regional sales director to meet those revenue quotas.

The regional sales director helps design the overall sales philosophy of the company and then designs practical strategies to implement them. This includes overseeing marketing campaigns, coordinating advertising, interfacing with inventory and purchasing departments, and helping each individual location understand and implement the campaign. This person also typically designs sales incentive programs either at the employee or store manager level.

A regional sales director typically has numerous sales outlets under his or her responsibility. They pay regular visits to these locations to ensure that the individual stores conform to the company's sales strategies and to assist in launching a new marketing campaign when employee training is necessary. The regional director also works with on-site managers to ensure that a consistent sales philosophy is maintained company-wide.

To be a regional sales director, a person generally needs a bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or a related discipline. Many companies prefer a post-baccalaureate degree in business management. Additionally, sales experience within the company or with a similar company is frequently required.
