In his/her supervisory capacity, the account supervisor will have some level of approval at most stages of ad development, from campaign pitches and creative assets to suggested media vectors. Those in this position also help ensure that all of these elements are consistent with the accounts' existing branding and are pleasing to the client, as well.
Account supervisors often check-in with clients on an individual basis to get their honest feedback of how their advertising account representatives are handling their business. As new accounts are pitched and contracted, the supervisor may determine which in-house representatives will handle the new business and seek to match the strengths of his staff with the needs of the client.
Advertising account supervisors must have outstanding interpersonal skills to work well with his/her representatives and network with clients. They must also have excellent organizational skills to manage the staff and keep appropriate tabs on their work, and may have to make budgetary or hiring decisions, as well.
To work as an account supervisor in advertising, applicants should typically have a university degree and some experience in communications or marketing. Many employers also prefer candidates with prior experience as account representatives, as well.
