While their work does not entail all the responsibilities of an expert chef, they often work closely with them to observe the full duties they will have following their apprenticeship. Aside from observing these duties, apprentices are often required to perform more menial duties to allow the cooks more time to focus on their work. These duties may include preparation of simple foods such as salads, cleaning tasks, and organizing food preparation areas.
Apprentice cooks usually work irregular shifts, often during nights and weekends. They work primarily in kitchens and the job may require physical exertion, heavy lifting, and the use of equipment such as fryers, ovens, and grills. Frequent clear communication with other workers, often in a high-stress setting, is also important. No formal responsibilities are required for apprentice chefs, but most will benefit from prior kitchen experience and attendance of culinary school. (Copyright 2017 PayScale.com)
