Bellmen often open the hotels’ main doors for their guests and carry their luggage to or from their hotel rooms. They may acquaint their guests with their rooms' features, such as how to operate televisions, locate light switches, operate the heater and/or air conditioner, and so on. Bellmen are often required to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, periodic overtime, and unscheduled shifts and public holidays; these all depend on the employer.
Those in this position must be physically healthy and strong, as they are required to carry heavy luggage weighing up to 75 pounds; they must also be able to organize and store luggage as necessary in designated areas. Excellent interpersonal skills and oral communication skills are very important in this position and a high school diploma (or equivalent) or equivalent practical experience is generally required. Some hotels conduct background checks, as well. In many hotels and resorts, bellmen are also required to work as valets and may even train and coach new bellmen.
