Job Description for Civil Engineering Technologist

A civil engineering technologist performs many of the tasks necessary to start, make progress on, and complete a civil project. The first responsibility of the civil engineering technologist is to gather field data on the site of the project by surveying, hand-measuring, taking photos of, and sketching the site. They then present this information to civil engineers and project managers; they work with the project manager to coordinate project requirements and design criteria. The technologist also works with project managers and civil engineers to develop preliminary plans in the form of maps, photos, CAD drawings, or dioramas. The technologist then creates construction documents, during which they must perform design calculations, check for compliance with applicable code, and perform estimations of project construction costs. The technologist then develops and draws design details and plans according to the direction of the project manager. They must also record and organize project files, email correspondence, design alterations, and project status reports. Finally, the civil engineering technologist perform field construction observation, making sure that the project proceeds according to the plans and specifications.
