A computer aided design and drafting technician (CADD) uses computer software to design plans for buildings and machines. A CADD technician may work in various industries, including engineering, construction, manufacturing, and architecture. Depending on the industry, the CADD technician may be responsible for creating original designs from a general idea or may act as an intermediary, creating electronic versions of technical drawings created by engineers or architects. CADD technicians may specialize in an industry, or may move from industry to industry as the job market dictates. On larger projects, a CADD technician works as part of a team with other technicians, each working on a separate part of the project. Work environment varies by industry as well. A CADD technician may work in a factory, on a construction site or in an office setting. Most CADD technicians work a standard 40-hour work week; however, deadlines may require CADD technicians to work overtime on evenings and weekends.
