A deli clerk works in a sandwich shop or delicatessen. They prepare ingredients and create sandwiches for customers upon request. In addition to fulfilling these responsibilities, the clerk needs familiarity with operating a cash register or point of sale machine for their business. Deli clerks need to be well-versed in the products and ingredients offered by their establishment, including being able to answer customer questions on these offerings. For delis that offer sandwiches by name, the clerk must be familiar with creating these sandwiches quickly and efficiently. The clerk may need to create customer-friendly, inviting counter displays. The clerk must ensure signage is accurate, and ingredients/products look as fresh as possible at all times.
Deli clerks must also work safely. They must have full understanding in using the various knives required by this job, as well as equipment such as slicers, salamander grills, and fryers. Normally establishments train new clerks on this equipment, but it is up to the clerk to ask questions and be familiar with proper operations before using it. In addition, the clerk must be aware of storage temperatures of individual items, as well as shelf life of products and contamination possibilities.
Because a deli clerk works in close contact with customers and fellow employees, many employers seek individuals for this position who are outgoing and possess good verbal communication skills. Employers may prefer previous deli or customer-service experience in this position. A deli clerk most frequently works during daytime hours, with many establishments open seven days per week.
