Fire Fighter Advice

Q: What is it like working as a Fire Fighter?

Fire Fighter in Victoria:
"Hirearchy."
Besides requiring Courses to put you in a position to become a new Firefighter, understand that there is a pecking order, and, that you as a probie, must follow that pecking order, is important. Understand that the Fire Department is built on Tradition and that that tradition is in place because it's been developed over a long period if time. Listen to what your told, you will live longer. Show respect for senior members, remember, they were where you are, and they may have influence with the powers that be in your regard. Take as many courses as the employer will provide, and others available to you, both on your career path, and on human nature. Be the first to volunteer to do anything your officer puts out there for the group, unless it's outside of you pay scale or job description at that particular time. Keep the Galley clean, coffee on, garbage empty, dishes done, washrooms clean, and floors swept, mopped, or vacuumed, etc. Ask lots of questions.
