Solar energy system installers' main responsibility is to install solar equipment in residential and commercial buildings. They must make sure that the installation is done properly, as well as provide excellent customer service to the client. These installers generally work with a construction manager to make sure that the installed solar energy system will meet the client's expectations. Additionally, they must ensure that the warehouse and trucks they use are stocked properly, as well as work effectively in a team setting. Solar energy system installers generally work full time in the construction field, and they are typically required to work outdoors. These professionals must be able to regularly lift up to 70 pounds, work in extreme heat or cold, and climb or crawl as required.
Solar energy system installer positions generally require at least a high school diploma or equivalent. While that is the minimum, most employers also want a bachelor's degree, along with certifications offered through organizations such as the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) and a journeyman's card. They need to also have at least one year of experience working with solar panel systems, a basic knowledge of solar technology, excellent attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.
