Assistant editors have many different responsibilities and job duties depending on the medium in which they work. For newspapers and magazines, they may assist the editor in chief with selecting and editing articles to be published, as well as editing, proofreading, and fact-checking. They may also help select digital media to accompany the article such as photographs, diagrams, or other illustrations; they may also help with layout.
In other fields, such as book publishing, assistant editors work with manuscripts. Assistant editors are responsible for proofreading and checking the manuscript for content, style, syntax, and other issues. Many assistant editors work their way up to a position in publishing by performing assistant editor duties such as fact checking and copy editing.
