Postsecondary/higher education teachers work in colleges, technical schools, and universities to administer lectures, coursework, homework, tests, and other work to students. Strong public speaking skills are necessary in this position to engage students so they retain information using a variety of materials, such as notes, pictures, and videos. Based on grades, the teacher may also reach out to students who seem to be struggling, and changes may be made to teaching methods if the class seems to be struggling overall. Good record-keeping skills are important in order to organize and grade classwork, homework, and tests, and some institutions expect these teachers to conduct grading during non-paid hours, such as at home.
A master's or doctorate degree and extensive knowledge in the subject being taught are generally required for this position, and these teachers should continuously explore new information in the field so it may be integrated into the class.
