Posetsecondary/higher education lecturers perform a number of tasks in postsecondary institutions. They are responsible for delivering lectures and seminars, developing and implementing teaching methods, and constructing exams and assessments. Lecturers also attend staff meetings, participate and serve on committees, grade work, and assign final grades. This line of work is mainly mental, although candidates are often required to speak in front of a crowd (typically standing) for several hours at a time. Lecturers are generally required to have a postsecondary degree in their chosen subject. This generally includes a Ph.D., but some employers accept substantial experience in the field along with a lower-level degree. Skills that are helpful for individuals in this line of work include the ability to generate enthusiasm about their subject, expertise in their subject area, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work with many types of people. Lecturers should also be organized, able to multitask, and able to work well in groups and independently.
Lecturers may work part time or full time, depending on the terms of their employment and their courseload. They typically work during the day, but they may work at night depending on their courses' times. Work outside of the classroom is required for grading, planning, and meetings with students as well.
