Before a project starts, the project director reviews the desired outcome of the project and strategically plans how to achieve the goal with available resources. The director breaks the project into phases, planning the staffing and funding for each. As the project progresses, the director monitors the ongoing success and adjusts planning accordingly.
Project directors must possess several key qualities. Leadership is an important aspect of the role, including navigating project team members through changes and guiding the group toward goals. As part of this, project directors must have excellent teamwork skills. Project directors solicit group members for input and incorporate suggestions to better meet the project's goals. Project directors must also be able to effectively work with clients, representing the entire group (or company) and acting as a spokesperson. This requires excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
For the most part, project directors work full time in an office environment. Educational and experiential requirements differ depending on the project manager's field. For example, in manufacturing, most project directors have a bachelor's degree in engineering along with related work experience that includes management and finance.
