Trainee solicitor is a position in some countries - such as the United Kingdom and Australia - that involves training at a law firm to become a professional solicitor. Trainee solicitors generally have a training contract that specifies the length of time that a trainee solicitor will work for the law firm; this contract normally lasts approximately two years. An undergraduate degree in law or related subject is needed before starting the training contract with a solicitor. Trainee solicitors must also successfully complete a Legal Practice Course exam to start their training.
Trainee solicitors must have excellent interpersonal, critical thinking and analytical skills, and they also need to be able to discuss complex legal concepts in a way that laymen clients can understand.
