An executive chef for a hotel provides a fine dining experience in the restaurant of a hotel. This chef usually manages other chefs and cooks. The chef will often be responsible for the training of kitchen staff.

The executive chef may also be expected to come up with marketing strategies to attract customers, which may involve improving the image of the company, modifying the menu, and changing the display and presentation of foods. In some places, the chef may be expected to interact directly with customers, so it is important to have a friendly demeanor and to look presentable. Some positions will require the chef to be able to create custom meals for customers. In other positions, the chef will personally shop for the ingredients that are to be used in the meals, so it is important to pick out the best-quality ingredients. Budget management is also important. The chef may also coordinate room service efforts. It is important to make sure that hygiene practices are observed within the kitchen, and that the kitchen is free of hazards. This will prevent any diseases from being passed into the food, as well as injuries happening on the job.
