Job Description for French Translator
A French translator is someone who translates written and verbal communication to and from the French language. Many translators specialize in particular areas, such as real-time translation of verbal communication, which is essential in both business and diplomatic settings. Others specialize in written communication and work not only in businesses to create legible documents to and from the French language, but also in the publishing sphere to offer translations of books and periodicals.Read More...
Translators are typically expected to work in two-way communications. For example, a French translator should be prepared to translate French to English and English to French, which requires very high levels of fluency in both languages, including not only rules of grammar but also in-depth knowledge of idioms and dialects. Because of the intricacies of idioms and slang, most business and public sector employers of French translators prefer candidates who speak French as their native language and English as a second.
Aspiring translators working in real-time speech translation must be able to actively listen and quickly convert back and forth from French to English; for this reason, some verbalized pausing and minor hesitation is to be expected, but only to a certain degree. In written translation work, most employers expect idiomatically-perfect translations which retain all aspects of meaning. This can be particularly difficult in the publication industry, when translators may be working with creative writers using nuances and language cues that are perhaps best experienced in the native language only.
Many employers may prefer French translators who speak French as their first language. However, those interested in this career can improve their job prospects by earning a university degree in French and spending plenty of time in settings where only French is spoken. These translators typically work regular business hours in a business office setting, and travel may be required for some positions. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
