Job Description for Housekeeping Manager
A housekeeping manager is responsible for managing the daily housekeeping operations in companies that have guests in residence, such as hotels and hospitals. They ensure that the housekeeping staff maintains standards of cleanliness and availability in residents' quarters and public areas. These managers also monitor and develop staff through performance observations, evaluations, and counseling. They also hire and plan staffing schedules for employees. Housekeeping managers have a team of housekeepers that report to them. Occasionally, especially in smaller organizations, they may supervise the maintenance team as well. Housekeeping managers often report to a general manager or supervisor of buildings and grounds. They may work a variety of hours to ensure effective operations during all of the shifts over which they preside.
The educational requirements for housekeeping managers vary. With extensive experience, a degree may not be necessary. However, some companies do require a minimum of an associate’s degree in any field. Supervisory experience is especially helpful, and strong organization, communication, and multitasking skills are important.
Housekeeping managers may become certified through the International Executive Housekeepers Association, which offers a certified executive housekeeper (CEH) geared towards those with a high school diploma and a registered executive housekeeper (REH) for those with a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, some states offer certification programs in management that are applicable to housekeeping managers.
