Job Description for Lead Software Development Engineer, Test (SDET)
Lead software development engineers in test (SDET) are responsible for leading the testing process for software engineering applications. They are in charge of providing technical leadership for the design and implementation of test automation and applications. Lead SDETs convey software concepts to other development staff, as well as non-technical professionals. Additionally, they lead the testing efforts for small cross-functional engineering teams to meet customers' deadlines and requirements. They also write performance test plans and automation for integrated services and clusters. Other tasks performed by lead SDETs include performing code troubleshooting, debugging, and refactoring as required, as well as using a personal computer loaded with testing and software development programs to conduct trials and perform extensive testing. Lead SDETs also compose user stories for tests with realistic time/effort estimates and write detailed technical reports based on them. They actively participate in product specification reviews and assist teams writing and reviewing test plans. These professionals generally report their progress to the software development test manager in their department.
A bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field is generally required for this job, as is relevant experience. Industry and leadership certifications may be beneficial. Lead SDETs should have experience in required programming languages, such as Python, Shell, C, and/or Java. They need to have strong communication, leadership, and communication skills as well. They must work efficiently in a team environment to find solutions to testing issues; however, they also need to perform effectively on their own with minimal supervision.
